The vision of the National Bal Bhavan is to develop creative thinking among children through non-formal educational activities which will inculcate in them confidence, self reliance, secular attitude and love for values that, in turn, will make our nation stronger.
Bal Bhavan is an institution which aims at enhancing the creative potential of children by providing them various activities, opportunities and common platform to interact, experiment, create and perform according to their age, aptitude and ability. It offers a barrier-free environment with immense possibilities of innovation, minus any stress or strain.
Located at Kotla Road, near I.T.O., New Delhi, it caters to children between the age group of 5 to 16 years. Bal Bhavan is an autonomous body under the ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). It remains closed on Sundays, Mondays and Gazetted Holidays. It remains open from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
A creative centre for children with regular workshops on theatre, music, painting and clay modelling. National Children’s Museum and Science Park are within the Bal Bhavan complex.
National Bal Bhavan gives immense importance to preservation of natural resources. In sync with this objective our Paper recycling unit produces handmade paper from waste paper generated in various section of National Bal Bhavan. The Rain Water Harvesting system put up in the science park has aided in raising the water table.
* Since 1995 the National Bal Bhavan has been honouring the most creative children of country in four fields of Creative Arts, Creative Performance, Creative Writing and Creative Scientific Innovation. Since 1995 – 2007, 257 children have been conferred with the Bal Shree Honour. For the year 2008 and 2009, 108 children have been selected after three levels of selection and would be conferred with their honours by H.E. The President of India Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil.
* The National Training Resource Centre which deals with imparting of teacher training organises the integrated training programme and creative workshops, visual arts workshop which caters to teachers and teacher trainees. The visual arts workshop is unique in nature as subject teachers work in close coordination with Art & Craft and performing arts teachers of the participating schools so that subject teaching and learning become a joyous experience for both the teacher and the student. A special Integrated Training Programme for State Bal Bhavan teacher was organised from 6th – 30th Apr. 2009. 70 Teachers from different Bal Bhavans took part in this workshop. During the course of the workshop the participants learnt about varied art forms -painting, handicraft, mask making, dance drama, music and science related activities. The teachers were also divided in groups for taking activities with children during the workshop.
* The Education for All programmes was organised from 23rd – 25th April, 2009, about 270 children from different parts of Delhi, JBB, Mandi, Bal Bhavan Kendras as also institutes catering to children with special needs participated in the programme. During the EFA programme a book release programme of 4 Norwegian Picture Books translated into Hindi was organised. H. E. Ms. Ann Ollestad the Ambassador of Norway released the books.
