Forbes has released its 30th annual guide to the world’s richest people. According to Forbes, this year there are 1,810 billionaires in the world, down from a record 1,826 a year ago. Put together, all of Forbes’ richest have an aggregate net worth of $ 6.5 trillion, down $ 570 billion from last year. Click on to see the five richest people in the world, according to Forbes.
1. Bill Gates – $ 75 Billion
American businessman Bill Gates was born William Henry “Bill” Gates III on October 28, 1955. In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft, which would become the the biggest PC software company in the world. Gates was first included in the Forbes wealthiest people list in 1987. He was the wealthiest person on the list from 1995 to 2007, again in 2009, and has been on the top of the list since 2014. He has been married to his wife, Melinda, since 1995 and has three children.
2. Amancio Ortega – $ 67 Billion
Spanish fashion businessman Amancio Ortega was born Amancio Ortega Gaona on March 28, 1936 in Busdongo de Arbas, Leon, Spain. On June 12, 1985 he became the founding chairman of the multinational clothing company Inditex and its best known fashion line Zara. In 2014 he was ranked the wealthiest person in the world by Forbes for four hours, beating Bill Gates during this time. Ortega has been married twice and currently resides in La Coruna, Spain with his second wife, Flora Perez Marcote. He has three children.
3. Warren Buffett – $ 60.8 Billion
American businessman Warren Buffett was born Warren Edward Buffett on August 30, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the most successful investor in the world and is the chairman, CEO and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway. In 2008, Buffett beat Bill Gates to become the richest person in the world with a total net worth estimated at $ 62 billion. In 2006, Buffett pledged to give away 99% of his wealth after he dies.
4. Carlos Slim Helu – $ 50 Billion
Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Helu was born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City, Mexico. Slim is the chairman and chief executive of telecommunications companies Telmex and America Movil, which is Latin America’s largest mobile phone provider. Slim’s portfolio includes a wide array of businesses including investments, real estate, planes, automobiles and collectibles. Helu is the widower of Soumaya Domit and has five children.
5. Jeff Bezos – $ 45.2 Billion
American technology entrepreneur and investor Jeffrey Preston “Jeff” Bezos was born on January 12, 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is the founder and CEO of Amazon.com and in 2013 purchased The Washington Post newspaper. Once graduating from Princeton in 1986, Bezos moved to New York to work on Wall Street in the computer science field. He founded Amazon.com in 1994 after learning about the rapid growth of internet ecommerce. Bezos married his wife, MacKenzie, in 1994 and they have four children together.
