Odd-Even: Women, cars with school students exempt

New Delhi: Women motorists and cars ferrying school students in uniform will be exempt during the second phase of the odd-even traffic scheme starting on April 15, it was announced on Wednesday.

Delhi’s Transport Minister Gopal Rai said security concerns were the main reason behind the government’s decision to exempt women from the fortnight-long scheme.

“As per people’s wishes, the chief minister has decided that women will remain exempt in the second phase of the odd-even scheme. Security is the main reason behind this decision,” Rai told the media.

Vehicles carrying school children in uniform will also be exempt.

“During the first phase of the odd-even scheme (January 1-15), schools were closed. This time they are open. We don’t want children to suffer at all. So the vehicles carrying school children in uniform will also be exempt from the odd-even restrictions,” Rai said.

According to the odd-even formula, vehicles with odd registration numbers will be allowed to ply on odd dates and those with even registration numbers on even dates.

The aim is to cut drastically the number of vehicles on Delhi’s otherwise normally choked roads in a bid to curb air pollution.

The traffic curbs won’t be applicable on Sundays.

The minister said those who were exempt in the first phase will enjoy the benefit now too — central government ministers and VVIPs besides CNG vehicles.

Bikers are also likely to be allowed to ply during the upcoming odd-even phase. The final notification detailing all the exemptions will be issued on Friday.

The first phase of the odd-even scheme turned out to be hugely popular in the capital.
