The Supreme Court has said that diesel taxis running on an all-India permit in the NCR can operate until the expiry of their permit. The court’s ruling came as a huge relief to the 64,000 diesel taxis in the city and the BPO industry that uses these taxis to ferry their employees.
The court also announced that the diesel taxis can do a point-to-point pick-up and drop within the city till their permits are valid just like those used by the BPO industry. Existing diesel cabs with an all-India permit will get an ‘O’ certificate and the new vehicles will get an ‘N’ permit.
While existing AITP cabs can continue to do point-point pick-up and drop within the city, new taxis are not allowed to run as city cabs. However, it is still not sure whether these taxis can be used by cab aggregators.
The ban on registration of diesel cars and SUVs with engine capacity of 2000 cc or more has not been lifted. The court also said that the diesel cabs will run in compliance to rules laid down by the government on safety, security and fares. New taxis will be registered only if they run on petrol or CNG.
