Iran, considered to one of the most conservative nation, has arrested eight models working for online modeling agency for not wearing headscarves.
Models have arrested for sharing photos showing them not wearing headscarves on Instagram and other social networking sites. The authorities have deemed them ‘un-Islamic’ for sharing pictures without a headscarf.
Not only this, a report suggest that leading Iranian model Elham Arab – famous for her blonde hair, doll-like looks and wedding dress shoots – has been forced to give a public self-criticism. She was charged with ‘promoting western promiscuity’ for sharing pictures of herself online without a headscarf.
Arab was interrogated on camera at the Iranian Revolutionary Court while she was wearing a black chador.
The arrests were made following a sting operation code-named ‘Spider-2’ which particularly targeted users of the picture-sharing site Instagram.
Nearly 170 people have been identified for being involved in online modeling and running Instagram pages including 59 photographers and makeup artists, 58 models, 51 fashion salon managers and designers, and two active institutions.
“They have been making and spreading immoral and un-Islamic culture and promiscuity”, the court's prosecutor Javad Babaei said.
Apart from eight people being arrested, 29 others may be subjected to criminal investigation.
According to reports those arrested include Melikaa Zamani, Niloofar Behboudi, Donya Moghadam, Dana Nik, Shabnam Molavi, Elnaz Golrokh and Hamid Fadaei.
Reports suggest that the crackdown on models is part sterilising cyberspace as during the monitoring it was noticed that more than 20 percent of the social media used by our youth is directed at modelling business via Instagram.”
