India Approves Use of Erotic Pictures in Condom Ads, but Pakistan Isn’t Much Happy

Do the scantily dressed women and steamy couples in condom packets offend you? Well, the centre thinks that it is perfectly fine to have ‘sexy’ pictures on condom packs, contraceptives and other sexual wellness products.

 

One month ago the Supreme Court asked Maninder Singh, government’s third ranked legal officer, to decide on behalf of the centre whether the representations used in these packets are too racy to be handled by the Indian audience.

 

After scanning through dozens of case files containing ‘objectionable’ photos, Singh has finally come to the conclusion that the titillating pictures can stay on the packs. The government now is all set to tell the apex court that there is no need to regulate the images on condom packets. The centre will also tell the court that there are provisions in the law that ensure that the companies self-regulate the advertisements.

 

Last month a group of condom and contraceptive manufacturers filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the 2008 Madras High Court order that directed them to keep their ads free of obscene and explicit pictures.
