Lodi Gardens (Hindi: लोधी बाग़, Urdu: لودھی باغ) is a park in Delhi, India. Spread over 90 acres (360,000 m2), it contains, Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Sikander Lodi’s Tomb, Sheesh Gumbad and Bara Gumbad, architectural works of the 15th century Sayyid and Lodis, a Pashtun dynasty which ruled much of Northern India during the 16th century, and the site is now protected by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

The gardens are situated between Khan Market and Safdarjung’s Tomb on Lodi Road. It is beautiful and serene, and is a hotspot for morning walks for the Delhiites.

This sultry Sunday evening was spent exploring monuments at Lodi Garden. Our heritage walk starts at gate number one of the Lodi Garden. As we walk in the Bada Gumbad stands majestic right before us. But our our stop is towards the path on the left. After a brief introduction, we walk towards Mohammad Shah Sayyid’s tomb. The tomb is landscaped beautifully, surrounded by tall palm trees. As we enter the tomb chamber, we see a dog lying majestically on the grave of the Sultan. The moral of the story then is, that no matter how important a person you are, somewhere down the line a dog is going to sleep on you!!!

The path from the tomb leads towards the recently created butterfly conservatory, beyond which is the Bada Gumbad complex and the Shish Gumbad. The Bada Gumbad complex consists of a massive gateway topped by a huge dome (which gives the building its name, literally, big dome), a grave platform, a mosque, and a couple of rooms opposite the mosque. The Bada Gumbad mosque is particularly notable for its fine plasterwork decoration. The Shish Gumbad which stands facing the Bada Gumbad gets its name from the blue tile decoration on its façade, which shines like a mirror in the sun; shish means mirror and gumbad is dome. Both monuments are similar in design which is typical of architecture under the Lodi Sultans.

The next stop on our walk was Sikander Lodi’s tomb. The tomb is one of the early garden tombs of India and resembles a mini fortress. The tomb is an octagonal in plan, surrounded by a garden which is then enclosed within an enclosure wall complete with bastions and battlements. A little further is one of the surviving medieval bridges in Delhi, the Athpula built in the 16th century during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. A couple of late Mughal monuments stand in close proximity to each other. One is a garden pavilion and other is a small mosque probably meant for private use. Both these were restored a few months ago before the Commonwealth Games and look particularly beautiful when illuminated. Our heritage walk ended at the stand alone turret a few yards ahead.

History

Sheesh Gumbad viewed from the rear arch of the Bara Gumbad
The tomb of Mohammed Shah, the last of the Sayyid dynasty rulers, the earliest of the tombs in the garden, was built in 1444 by Ala-ud-din Alam Shah as a tribute to Mohammed Shah.

As there is little architecture from these two periods remaining in India, Lodi Gardens is an important place of preservation. The tomb of Mohammed Shah is visible from the road, and is the earliest structure in the gardens. The architecture is characterised by the octagonal chamber, with stone chhajjas on the roof and guldastas on the corners.
Another tomb within the gardens is that of Sikander Lodi, which is similar to Mohammed Shah’s tomb, though without the chhatris, it was built by his son Ibrahim Lodi in 1517, the last of Sultan of Delhi from Lodi dynasty, as he was defeated by Babur, First battle of Panipat in 1526, this laying the foundation of the Mughal Empire. His tomb is often mistaken to be the Sheesh Gumbad, and is actually situated in near the tehsil office in Panipat, close to the Dargah of Sufi saint Bu Ali Shah Qalandar. It is a simple rectangular structure on a high platform approached by a flight of steps. The tomb was renovated by the British, and an inscription mentioning Ibrahim Lodi’s defeat at the hands of Babur and the renovation was included in 1866.

In the centuries, after the 15th century Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, two villages grew around the monuments, but the villagers were relocated in 1936 in order to create the gardens. During British Raj, it was landscaped by Lady Willingdon, wife of Governor-General of India, Marquess of Willingdon, and hence named the ‘Lady Willingdon Park’ upon its inauguration on April 9, 1936, and 1947, after Independence, it was given its present name, Lodi Gardens.

Later, it was re-landscaped in 1968 by J A Stein, who also designed the adjacent India International Centre, along with Garrett Eckbo,[6] during the time Stein also made a glass house within the park. A British-period gateway, is still being used as an entrance that once welcomed visitors to ‘Lady Willingdon Park’.

Mohammed Shah’s Tomb

In the middle of the gardens is the Bara Gumbad (“Big Dome”), it consists of a large rubble-construct dome, it is not a tomb[citation needed] but a gateway to an attached a three domed masjid (mosque), both built in 1494 during the reign of Sikander Lodi, there is also a residence surrounding a central courtyard, where the remains of a water tank can be seen. Opposite the Bara Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad (“Glass dome”) for the glazed tiles used in its construction, which contains the remains of an unknown family, this was also built during the reign of Sikander Lodi.

Lodi Gardens – a green haven on Lodhi Road

Further into the gardens, are remains of a watercourse connected to the Yamuna River to Sikander Lodi’s tomb. This tomb still has the battlements enclosing it. Nearby to Sikander’s tomb is the Athpula (“Eight Piered”) Bridge, the last of the buildings in Delhi, built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, it contains seven arches, amongst which the central one being the largest.

Since 2005, INTACH and Archeological Survey of India (ASI) organize heritage walks for students and general public within the park area, which has become a favorite with morning walkers and yoga enthusiasts. It is also a popular picnic spot for the residents of New Delhi. INTACH has made available a small booklet, offering information about park’s history, and the monuments, birds and trees within the complex. In 2009, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) awarded the restoration project of five monuments with the garden in phases to and INTACH Delhi Chapter, starting with the Bara Gumbad, Shish Gumbad and Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, after conservation report for the sites were being prepared since 2007. The MoU of the Rs 1 crore, first phase of the project funded by Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) was signed in 2005, initiating the process of conservation in which structural work began in 2009.

Spread over an area of 176-acre, the Delhi Zoo is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a hill on one side, and a picturesque lake on the other. A favored spot for the migratory birds, it also holds numerous exhibits and enclosures of rare animals and birds. The zoo is a favorite with the kids and a popular picnic place for Delhiites. Do yourself a favor and don’t go on a Sunday, it is spilling over the brim with visitors. It also has an early 17th century Kos Minar, built by Jehangir, son of emperor Akbar, at every kos (four miles) between Agra and Lahore.

The Indian Board for Wildlife felt in the year 1952 to have a zoo in the national capital of the country to provide recreation to people at large.National Zoological Park or the Delhi Zoo is one of the finest zoos in Asia and is situated close to Purana Qila or Old Fort. It extends over a massive area of 214 acres and was established in 1959. It aims to provide natural habitat to more than 2,000 animals and birds species that have been brought here from different parts of India as well as other continents such as Africa, America, Australia, etc. Accordingly, an ad-hoc committee of some prominent nature lovers of Delhi, including Smt. Indira Gandhi, was constituted under the Chairmanship of Chief Commissioner to formulate a proposal for establishment of Zoological Park for Delhi. Mr M.E.F.Bowring Welsh, of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, was appointed as its Secretary. Delhi Zoo proves to be an idyllic picnic spot in winters. The serenity and the greenery here seem very pleasing and offer a delightful respite from the humdrum of the city. The committee met on 9th September, 1953 and approved the site between Purana Quila and Humayun’s Tomb for the purpose. The winding pathways lead to the administrative building, with a library on the right side, where you can get all the information on animals, birds, plants and rare zoological species in India. Visitors, especially children, love to see Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, Spider monkey, African Wild Buffalo, Gir Lion and Zebras, water animals and birds such as Macaque, Banteng, Emu, Hyenas, Axis Deer, Fallow Deer, Peafowl, Hog Deer and the Jaguar. The underground Reptile Home Complex displays a wide array of snakes such as King Cobra & Pythons. It was also decided that the Central Government will develop the park and hand it over in running condition to the Delhi Government since wildlife was managed by Forest Department of the Delhi Government.Besides these, there are more than 200 varieties of trees here, including the hanging deep yellow Alamtas Hedges, the drought resistant Lahura trees and the native Delhi Bistendu. Delhi Zoo also has an early 17th century Kos Minar, which was built by Jehangir, son of Emperor Akbar. An official from Indian Forest Service Mr. N.D.Bachkheti was assigned the duty on 1st October 1955 to setup this Zoo.You can admire the vast expanse of the Zoological Park, as you climb up the red sandstone gate. The Zoo is an all time favorite amongst the children. It offers facilities like mobile vans and cafeteria for food, drinking water and parks to rest. You can visit the zoo throughout the year on all days, except Monday. National Zoological Park is one of the finest and largest zoos in Asia and efforts have been made to provide an almost natural habitat to the animals and birds herein New Delhi.National Zoological Park of Delhi is a home to over 2000 species of animals and birds from Africa, Australia, America and Asia. At National Zoological Park in Delhi you can also locate the Kos Minar which was put up by Mughal emperor Jehangir. National Zoological Delhi is a wonderful place for nature enthusiasts. The well maintained zoo has red sand and gravel pathways taking one between the animal enclosures. The entire area is a smoke-free zone with strict food and beverage checks at the entrance. There is a canteen within the park and numerous trolleys for soft drinks and water. The zoo is also accessible to the physically disadvantaged with numerous facilities for them. The winding pathway, laid with the red Badarpur gravel, swerves off into two directions after approximately one km. Along with the wildlife on both the sides; the right side of the zoo also consists of a library, a storehouse of information on animals, birds, plants, rare zoological species, etc in India. One goes out with large groups of family together to enjoy lunch and also play games along with the children. Children especially are really fond of the amusement parks and the boat ride in lakes around. Here at the National Zoological Park, birds and animals live in an environment that in many ways resemble their natural habitat. The National Zoological Park not only provides a home for endangered species, but also helps them to breed in captivity. Eventually they may once again thrive in the wild.

Wildlife Animals In National Zoological Park Delhi or Delhi Zoo:

Built by king Shahjahan’s daughter, Roshanara, as a pleasure garden, it later became her final resting place. In the early 1900s, the area was rented to a European club. The club still exists and there is also a cricket ground, which is very popular. Most of this area is still very well-maintained but the tomb lies in neglect.

Roshanara Club is one of the oldest Club of Delhi with very few members in the beginning on it’s
Roll in 1922, over the years it has progressed manifolds and today we have more than 2900 members.

The Roshanara Club is a Metropolitan city club. The elite of capital are it’s members. Business people, politicians, lawyers, high officials of Delhi Admn., State and Central Govt. and. Judges of Lower and High courts, professionals indeed people from all walks of life – make up the membership. It is ideally located on one side of Roshanara Gardens and from din and noise of Delhi where members can sit and relax in it’s lush-green and beautiful surroundings.

Everything about the Club has a regal air. Roshanara Gardens has Moghul Sultanat like Nishat and Dilshad Garden. This Club has an area of about 22 acres of land, all lush green, with old trees of Sheesham, Jamun, Mango, Peepal, Gulmohar, Palm and Narangi and other leafy trees giving the Club a look of Mini forest type. Our club is centrally located.

It is primarily catering to the social, recreation and cultural needs of the residents of Delhi. Roshanara Club is one of the handful clubs in the country providing all possible amenities to it’s members, their
Guests and members of reciprocating clubs.

Basically it is sports club first M.C.C. Cricket Match was played in lush-green Cricket ground of Roshanara club. One to two teams from U. K. High Commission play friendly cricket match with
Club every year.

Roshanara Club is more famous for Cricket Board which was held in front of an old fire place in Roshanara Club one winter evening. All present were strongly in favour of formation of a Board of Control of Cricket in India. Most keen were (Arthur) Gilliagan who gave great encouragement and pleaded the case to Lords. Later some well-placed personalities like: Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, R.E.Grant Goven, Gilliagan and A.S.Demello pioneered the Concept and finally formed the Board of Control for Cricket in India in the meeting held in Roshanara Club in the year 1928.

Dr. S Radha Krishnan unveiled the plaque celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in Roshanara Club in the year 1953-54. A trophy showcase located in the lobby of the Club gave an idea of Cricket Museum. The tradition of uplifting the cricket game is bring maintained still. Coaching of cricket is being conducted for the young boys, under eminent coaches. Matches are still being played. Had Roshanara Club not been located in the interiors of Old Delhi, it would have continued to be the home of Indian Cricket in Delhi. Famous cricketers like Jack Hobbs, S.H.Sutchiffe, Frank worrel, Jack Living Stone, Fillip Maker, Richard Attenborugh, and the Mountbatens had walked on the rich turf of Roshanara Club.

ROSHANARA CLUB offers an array of entertainment and recreational facilities to members. An ideal rendezvous for the families to relax after a hard day’s work. The Club is managed by committee of it’s members elected by General Body of the Club.Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Delhi is President and Mr. Deputy Chhatwani (Industrialist) – Hon’ble Gen. Secretary is playing the key roll in the efficient functioning of Club. The Club is a social one and holds all the programmes like Diwali, Independence Day, X’mas, and New Year etc. Yet great emphasis is placed on sports. Following are the activities available to the members, their families and guests.

The Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, once just a forgotten marsh land, was developed by the government into a aviary haven for both local as well as migratory birds. Today with over 250 species of birds spotted within the park, the sanctuary has been elevated to be known as the National Park of Haryana. The park is best visited during the winter months when more than 100 migratory bird species such as Siberian Cranes, Rosy Pelican, Long billed Pipit and Greater Flamingo make this retreat their feeding ground as they travel. But the park doesn’t disappoint during the rest of the year either, as the resident species of Paddyfield Pipit, Purple Sunbird, White Ibis, Laughing Dove among others make thetrip more than wonderful. In an attempt to further attract tourists to the sanctuary, the tourism board of Haryana have established a lodge within the sanctuary that rents out rooms to the public. The sanctuary is also home to an incrediblenumber of tree species such as Acacia and Neem and while on trail one can occasionally spot antelopes such as the Neelgai or Blue Bull as well as the Black Buck

Gurgaon is 15 and Delhi 48 km away. Diving time from Delhi is 1 hour. Take the National Highway 8 Delhi-Jaipur highway past Indira Gandhi International Airport, turning to Gurgaon from where you turn off for the Sultanpur road. Not well directions in Gurgaon. The nearest airport is Delhi’s Palam (Domestic) airport, 35 km away

This is a small area comprising a shallow freshwater lake and marshes amidst the cultivated plains of Gurgaon district of Haryana. The main “salt pan” within the lake almost dries up in summer but after a good monsoon attracts a large number of wetland avian species, especially in winter when migratory species arrive. Large herds of pelicans, flamingos, ducks, geese and waders may be seen here as well as avocets, sandpipers, starlings, blue-throats and more. A winter sunrise over Sultanpur lake is an experience no birdwatcher in Delhi should miss.

Near the Haryana border, close to the Apollo hospital, is a pretty park with fountains, lit in the evenings with colourful lights. The park is situated right on the banks of the Yamuna river and is a good getaway from the daily grind of the city. It has extensive manicured lawns and is also probably the best urban spot for bird watching.

If you desire to visit some of the most popular attractions of the capital city of Delhi, but are disappointed by heavy traffic jams and hot weather, here’s one way to capture a ultimate view of Delhi from one spot.

Built by European company on the similar lines and pattern as that of London Eye, this 45 m high giant wheel called Delhi Eye will definitely steal your heart away. It has been placed at an amusement park in Kalandi Kunj close to Yamuna river. It is as tall as 15 storey building and promises a snapshot of prominent monuments located in Delhi such as Red Fort, Akshardham Mandir, Lotus Temple, Qutab Minar and Humayun’s Tomb; apart from a bird’s eye view of Connaught Place all in matter of 20 minutes. You need to spend Rs 250 to take a ride on Delhi Eye.

Well that may excite you more, all the 36 cabins of Delhi Eye are air conditioned along with the fitted LCD screens. All the popular landmark’s of the city can be seen from the top. Each cabin holds the capacity to accommodate eight people, which means 288 people in total 36 cabins. You can sit back and relax, as one rotation takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. For the safety of passengers, there’s a ‘Help Button’ which any tourists can press if he/she feels scared or uncomfortable.

Delhi Eye has been internationally certified, so there’s should be no concern for the safety. Apart from that the power breakup, along with the manual brake system makes it risk free.
