Little did the three occupants and the driver of the auto-rickshaw knew what fate awaited them when they set out on late Friday night. A neurosurgeon's over-speeding Audi SUV had a massive collision with the three-wheeler in the Indirapuram area of Ghaziabad.
When the police arrived at the scene it was a horrible site with all four laid dead and their belongings like mobiles, wallets and slippers scattered all over the spot.
The victims were Rinky Yadav, a successful techie who was looking forward to an assignment in Australia, her family friends from Kanpur — 25-year-old Vishal and his cousin Yajuvendra, 40, who was a businessman.
The driver of the auto-rickshaw, Sanjeev, was an expectant father who had who had told his wife he’ll home to have dinner with her and his three-year-old daughter.
After waiting till 1 AM, seven-month pregnant Madhu called up her 25-year-old husband’s phone which was answered by a policeman who asked her if he could speak with a male member in the family.
Taken aback, she rushed to Sanjeev’s cousin Sudheesh Kumar, who lived in the next room in Khoda, woke him up and handed him the phone. The police officer told Sudheesh that Sanjeev had died in an accident.
Shocked upon learning of Sanjeev’s tragic demise, Sudheesh struggled to break the news to Madhu. “She collapsed on the floor as I told her,” Sudheesh said, adding that her world has come crashing down.
“She still believes Sanjeev will return as he had promised to have dinner with her and his three-year-old daughter,” Sudeesh said.
