Bengaluru Police Creates New Helpline for Live-In Couples

As more and more cases of personal disputes are registered by squabbling live-in couples, Bengaluru police now has a local helpline for such couples in the city who are locking horns with each other.

Saraswathi, the senior counsellor of Vanitha Sahayavani- city police’s helpline for women said that they have created a separate section that will deal with live-in couples who are at loggerheads. She also said that the case of live-in couples is more complicated because they are not bound by any legal obligation unlike other married couples.

The officer said that while these relationships go well in the beginning, the problem comes after a year or so in the relationship. “In most cases, arguments begin when one of them hopes for a long–term commitment, but the other doesn't reciprocate the sentiment. Typically in the cases we deal with, the woman would have hoped to marry her live-in partner after staying with him for a few years, but the man would claim he is under no obligation for a long-term commitment,” she added.
