Prime Minister Narendra Modi won people’s hearts on his first tour to Meghalaya. He tried his hands at drums at a cultural event hosted in his honour with folk dancers at Mawphlang village, East Khasi Hills district, located 25 Km from Shillong.
The serene village of Mawphlang is famed on account of beautiful plants, flowering trees, orchids and butterflies among others.
On 27th May, PM Modi had flagged off new passenger trains for the Northeast along with putting a foundation stone for a Football stadium ‘Ampati’. Moreover, he consistently interacted with several members of self help groups and discussed rural livelihood in the north-eastern region.
PM Modi had earlier addressed the valedictory session of the 65th plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council and claimed that the central government aspires to enhance develop the north-eastern region to the utmost extent.
The function also witnessed participation of Meghalaya governor V.Shanmuganathan, Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Further, the PM also visited a heritage village in Meghalaya on 28th May.
PM Modi never fails to amaze his admirers with his unique acts. Here also he tried his hand at photography while clicking pictures of folk artists at the heritage village.
On 27th May, during a visit to Shillong, the PM had discussed Meghalaya’s football potential and expressed his admiration for peoples’ passion and love towards the beautiful game. He also praised renowned footballers like Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Aibor Khongjee and Marlangki Suting from the state while acknowledging their contribution to both the state and country.
He discussed that India is all set to host the Under 17 FIFA World Cup in 2017 and asked Meghalaya people to take advantage of the event and strengthen the condition of football in the state.
Further, the PM discussed Cherrapunji and formally dedicated a Doppler Weather Radar to the town.
