As Nilgai Strayed in Delhi Roads, a Look at Other Ferals that Wandered in Cities

After four hours of ruckus, the state forest department officials finally rescued the Nilgai (blue bull) that strayed on the VVIP zone near the Parliament. The antelope had strayed from the Central Forest Reserve Area on the back of the President’s Estate.

The Nilgai was spotted during the early hours of the day, just before the VVIP movement was about to start. A PCR van was rushed to the area as soon as the animal was spotted. The chase also led to a minor accident- as the vehicle was about to take a sharp turn the Nilgai ran towards it and hit the van. This resulted in a broken window glass and injury to the animal.

A human chain encircled the lawn so that the animal did not run towards the road again. As a result, there was a traffic snarl in the area that lasted for an hour.

Forests officials confirmed that the animal has sustained injuries on the legs and it is being treated. “She has some injuries on her legs. As per initial report, it seems that she had come from Central Forest Reserve Area located on the backside of the President Estate,” said a senior forest official. He also added that since the Nilgai has a very delicate heart, it could not be chased back to the forest and needed to be rescued.
