The Legend Of Rani Laxmibai: Myths And Facts On Her Death Anniversary

Rani Laxmibai Of Jhansi was one of the greatest freedom fighters and leading nationalists of the country. Further, she is also renowned as one of the dominant figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The rebellion is also dubbed as the First War of Independence in Indian history.

 

Rani Laxmibai’s death anniversary is celebrated every year on 18th June. Historians have however raised questions over lots of facts related to the Queen of Jhansi. When Was Rani Laxmibai married?

Laxmibai was born on 19 November, 1835.
According to a myth, it’s stated that she gained martyrdom at the age of 23 years while fighting the British.
However, some historians consider it to be a lie.
Historian Om Shankar Asar who has written the book, ‘Jhansi Kranti Ki Kashi’ tells that Laxmibai wasn’t born in 1835. She was married to Jhansi’s king Gangadhar Rao in 1842. He further explains that if she was born in 1835, then she would have been only 7 years of age at the time of her marriage.
However, the Rani had learnt sword fighting and horse riding before her marriage. It seems really impossible to learn such tough acts at such a young age.
 As per Om Shankar, the Rani was born on 19th November, 1827.
She was married at 15 years of age and attained martyrdom when she was 31.
