The Nike Controversial ‘Nightie’ That Serena Williams Refuses To Wear

Nike has fallen into huge controversy as its Tennis ‘nightie’ embarrassed women tennis players and their midriff was on display. Star players such as Serena Williams (winner of 21 Grand Slam titles) and Sabine Lisicki have completely refused to wear it.

The 2016 Wimbledon Championships commenced on 27th June and will continue till 10th July.

The sports giant Nike has been accused of objectifying women and treating them as commodities. Sports stars and Wimbledon fans alike have panned its £75 dress by Nike. Further, criticism has flown from all quarters regarding the dress being quite flimsy and pushing the boundaries of decency.

Women tennis players have panned Wimbledon’s current dress and seem to be highly comfortable while playing in it. Its such a small dress that even the undergarments are visible at times.

Wimbledon is the oldest and one of the most prestigious tournaments of the world.

Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic felt highly awkward during her Wimbledon match. Most of the times she struggled to keep her dress down instead of concentrating on her game. However, her perseverance paid off as she was able to win her Singles match against Bethanie Mattek Sands (6-7, 7-6, 7-5).

The same scenario was witnessed in the case of Croatia’s Donna Vekic and Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Ironically, Wimbledon’s dress code is the most difficult on the grand slam circuit. Guidelines ask participants to be dressed in suitable tennis attire which should be completely white as they enter the court.
