Here’s Why Sardar Sarovar Dam Was Once Considered as the 8th Wonder of the World

Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSD), made on the Narmada river, is located in the village of Kevadia in the state of Gujarat. The work of setting 30 gates and central drive unit has completed.

It took nearly 57 years to get the dam completed and now its height has been increased to 138.68 meters from 121.92 meters. With this increase in height, it has now achieved the capacity of releasing 30.70 lakh cusecs of water.

The work to fix 30 doors, each having a height of 17 meters, were stopped by Narmada Control Authority in 2006 and was given a go ahead by Modi Government in 2014.

The foundation stone of the proposed dam at Gora in Gujarat was laid by late Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 5th April, 1961. At that time, the total expenses were estimated at Rs 3,333 crore but more than 47, 602 crore has been spent so far.

TIME magazine, in 1994 described the Narmada Project as one of the “Eight Modern Wonders A Building”. The dam is a part of the much larger plan of utilization of the whole course of river Narmada – the fifth largest in the country, comprising 30 Major Dams, 135 Medium Dams and about 3,000 Minor Dams along the 1,312 km length.
