Rohtak to Rio: Sakshi Malik, the Golden Girl of Indian Wrestling Who Created History by Winning Bronze

Wrestler Sakshi Malik not only ended India’s wait for a medal by clinching a bronze on day 12 of the Rio Olympic Games but also created history by becoming the first woman to win a medal in Wrestling.
 
The 23-year-old wrestler, who hails from Mokhra village near Rohtak in Haryana, defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova (8-5) to create history for India.
 
It was not at all an easy victory for Sakshi as she fought five bruising battles in the 58kg category against equally determined opponents in a single day before winning a bronze medal.
 
The inspiring show by Sakshi lifted the gloom that had descended over the Indian contingent that spent 11 days waiting for a medal. Overall, Sakshi has won India's fifth wrestling medal in the Olympic Games.
