Over 1,700 people have lost their jobs all of a sudden on Thursday today after 43 McDonald’s restaurants in Delhi have shut down with immediate effect. The closure is believed to be the result of infighting between McDonald’s itself and Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd (CPRL), which is an equal-partners joint venture between the US-headquartered company and Vikram Bakshi. The decision to close the outlets was taken in a meeting of the CPRL board on the morning of Wednesday, June 28. Both Bakshi and McDonald’s India have claimed that the closure is “temporary.” However, the notification reads CPRL is retaining the employees of affected restaurants and will pay them their salary during the period of suspension.
