Bread Containing Chemicals Which Can Lead To Cancer: CSE’s Findings Display Shocking Revelations

Center for Science and Environment has released a report which warns of our daily bread and its variants containing cancer causing chemicals – constituting Potassium Bromate and Potassium Iodate. These substances have been banned in several countries but weak regulations witness their presence in the Indian market.

CSE’s Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) has come out with shocking findings which discuss that Indian bread manufacturers utilize Potassium Bromate and Potassium Iodate for treating flour while preparing bread.

The year 1999 had witnessed the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) clarifying that Potassium Bronate possibly caused cancer in humans. Moreover, it led to kidney tumours, thyroid and cancer of the abdominal lining of laboratory animals on whom it was tested. Subsequently, it was banned by the EU in 1990 and then by the U.K. Other countries also understood its harmful effects and thus it faced ban in places like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Nigeria, Peru and Columbia amongst others.

CSE’s report reiterates that several brands of packaged bread and the bread utilized in pizzas and burgers contain highly toxic chemicals. CSE’s study further claimed that 19 out of 24 samples of packaged bread were tested and presented shocking revelations. Various samples of sandwich bread, bread used to prepare burgers, pav, bun and white bread contained the aforementioned chemicals. The CSE report was highly critical of Perfect Bread, Harvest Gold and Britannia as these contained higher levels of chemicals.

Based on its findings, CSE has urged that India’s Food Regulator, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) should take strict actions in this regard and completely ban the utilization of potassium bromate for preparing bread.

Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda has taken the severity of the situation into account and asked FSSAI to investigate CSE’s claims. Moreover, he has asked people not to panic as the govt. will take appropriate action in this regard.
